Trumpf Day-Care Center

Machine tool manufacturer, Trumpf, will build its first company daycare center. The one-storey, solid wood building will be prefabricated in a South Tyrolean factory and then assembled on site in Ditzingen. Construction will be completed by mid-2019. The daycare center will offer space for 75 children.

The building is set back within the industrial context and, thanks to its low height, blends almost seamlessly into the topography. With its flat pitched saddle roof and purlin construction, the building is also linked to the architecture of neighboring farms.

To protect the green roof from the effects of the weather, it will have an overhang on all four sides of the building— which varies in depth and protects rooms and terraces from direct sunlight. The saddle roof construction is designed as a so-called purlin roof. Generous skylights are arranged to the side of the ridge line for natural lighting, ventilation and smoke extraction.

The rear-ventilated building structure is constructed from prefabricated, unglued solid wood elements. The base layer consists of spruce (2 cm) and fir (6 cm) and is joined by dovetail connectors. The outer cladding consists of a 2.7 cm thick top layer of white fir, which is used everywhere in the visible area— insulated in between with wood fiber. The interior is divided by eight cubes, between which a meandering corridor runs. The cubes contain the group and employee rooms, a cloakroom and a kitchen. The corridor widens at three points within the building's perimeter, creating small "squares". These three intermediate spaces are available for communal use and have a direct connection to the outside space through their extensive glazing.
