Mercedes-Benz Campus

The goal of this two-phase competition was the extension in form and content of the already existing ‘Mercedes-Benz Welt’ (campus) consisting of Museum and Customer Center in Stuttgart Bad Cannstatt, Germany. The architects were asked to create a space wherein visitors can experience relevant topics and issues dealing with the future of mobility and the car.

Barkow Leibinger developed in collaboration with Topotek 1 a design which translates Mercedes-Benz’ values into an ‘architecture of movement, integrity and mobility’. Two undulating landscaped buildings bracket a central space which is covered by a wide, seemingly weightless roof. Pre-fabricated steel loops create a structure of dynamic pattern which also serves as the heating and cooling of the museum spaces.  A second layer of looped volumes, in a larger scale, provides the system for the fixed or movable spatial dividers.

The campus connects new and existing open spaces as well as new and existing buildings. The landscaping, in accord with the overall concept, embeds the building with its floating roof into a continuous space which extends without borders from the street to the green roofs of the landscaped buildings. This expands the already existing outside area with a publicly accessible park offering playgrounds, picnic lawns as well as more quiet resting zones.
