Biennale Bookshelves

As requested by Rem Koolhaas for the Elements of Architecture section in the main pavilion of the Giardinni for the 14th La Biennale di Architectura, “Fundamentals”, Barkow Leibinger developed a book stand for each section including walls, ceilings, doors, balconies, roofs etc. where the stand holds a large format 45.5 cm x 70.5 cm (when open) research catalogue (by AMO) pertaining to each section.

The shelves are simply digitally folded in half of brushed 4mm aluminum that can be attached simply to the walls of the pavilion.  The surface that holds the book cantilevers out of the wall. Its edges are canted to stiffen the edges of the metal and the corners are scroll-cut.

The shelves are utilitarian: nevertheless they illustrate an ongoing interest in fabrication technologies (laser cutting for polished edges and CNC bending) and the search for applications for these techniques.
